Dr. Arif Alvi Concludes Successful Tenure as FDI Counselor at World Dental Congress

One of Pakistan’s leading dental surgeon and parliamentarian Dr. Arif Alvi is currently attending the FDI Annual World Dental Congress in Istanbul- Turkey, where he will be concluding his second tenure as an elected FDI Counselor.

Over the past 6 years, Dr. Alvi had been elected twice, as an FDI counselor by more than 120 country delegates. During that tenure he actively participated and made valuable contributions to the numerous deliberations and initiatives of this global dental federation. He tweeted as below:

For years, orthodontist Awab Alvi has been an outspoken political activist via his blog, Teeth Maestro. With the onset of disastrous flooding in his native Pakistan this July, Awab traveled to the front lines, delivering food and supplies to flood victims. Though the aftereffects of the floods have caused personal family tragedy, Awab’s fierce love for and faith in his country make him optimistic about the future.

Historic Election Achievement

Dr Arif Alvi has been elected as a Trustee and Councilor of the World Dental Federation. The election was held in Salvador Brazil yesterday in the General Assembly in which delegates from more than 150 countries took part.

He was voted in by more than a hundred countries with a clear majority when 62% delegates casted their votes in his favor. He soundly defeated candidates from India, Brazil, New Zealand, Italy, Malaysia and Armenia. Millions are spent in the campaign for these elections by some countries with embassies and foreign ministries playing a major role, but Dr Alvi won the election without any extraneous expenses or help. Delegates gave importance to his candidature as the Asia Pacific Region had recognized him and bestowed the List of Honor award on him for outstanding contributions to dentistry.

This was the biggest congress of dentists in recent years and there were more than 10000 participants. The floods in Pakistan were also discussed in the General Assembly where it was decided to consider helping the flood victims in Pakistan similar to the effort done for Haiti by the World Dental Federation. It must be pointed out that no Pakistani or Indian has ever been elected to this prestigious position before.

Awab Alvi TEDxKarachi On the 4th of June Karachi witnessed an amazing event in the form of TEDxKarachi organized by a team of volunteers, in which Dr. Awab Alvi as a TEDIndia fellow curated the first session of the meeting. The event was organized under the official license from the TEDx organization and showcased seven speakers who motivated the audience with their own inspirational stories in the trademark 18-minutes TED Talks. Alvi Dental Hospital is please to update that Dr. Awab Alvi [Blogs as Teeth Maestro] has recently been selected as a TEDIndia Fellow for his leadership capabilities and his innovative work in Pakistan. Dr. Arif Alvi elected as Counselor at FDI

In the annual conference of the FDI in Dubai 2007, Dr. Arif Alvi was elected as a counselor for a period of three years into this prestigious body. FDI, Federation Dentist Internationale is the world governing body of dentists, it is for the first time in history that a Pakistani has been elected as an office bearer into this organization and that too with a landslide victory.
